We started the day with eggs & bacon, and fresh baked blueberry & poppy seed muffins. We got used to the wonders of the kitchen - baking? - as we got used to the fantastic scenery but when we think about it we are always astounded.
While on the river, our boatmen (especially Nate) kept us entertained with information about the canyon, the geology, the history of the native peoples and early explorers, myths of the canyon, and riddles. Our first stop of the day was at mile 40, mine shaft hike
Mile 41 another short hike, to Bert Loper’s boat. Bert made his first run through the canyon at age 69. Died a decade later in 1949 on second trip while running 24 1/2 Mile Rapid. Boat found sixteen miles downstream. The weathered hulk remains.
Mile 57 lunch
Mile 60, hiked Chuar Butte where we saw a fragment of Jun 30 1956 airliner collision claiming 128 lives. This collision precipitated the laws that now prohibit commercial airliners from flying over the Grand Canyon,
Mile 61.4 Little Colorado joins Colorado R. Calcite makes blue. Warmer & great swimming with the small rapids to go through.
Mile 65 camp at Carbon. Another beautiful camp. The sand is just like Lake Michigan sand. While in camp we were able to get a bath (but water is so cold this is very difficult). We didn't seem to have a lot of time before it's time for appetizers. How do our boatmen do it? Steve & Robin are sitting on the cots we each have and you can see the chairs as well as one of the wet bags.Dinner is salad, chicken & cornbread. Arlene, wildlife collector she is, collected a mouse in her purse. Eileen was stung by a scorpion (wasplike in effect).
