At RM 88 we passed by Kaibab & Bright Angel pedestrian (& mule) suspension bridges. This is the populated part of the Grand Canyon (although we just saw three people - looked like they were hiking back out).
We had lots of rapids yesterday, but mostly smaller rapids. At RM 91 we hit Horn Creek Rapid (named for devils horns) and it was devilish. Motor cut out and we got a more exciting ride than anticipated. WOW!
RM 98 - Crystal Rapid - got out of boat and surveyed it before running the big one. For Newty this was perhaps the toughest rapid but for us it was nothing like Horn Creek. (Created in 1966, when biblical rains and flash floods lashed the North Rim with 14 inches of rain and deposited car-size boulders in the main stem of the Colorado River, Crystal Rapid is generally regarded as the most thrilling falls of the trip.)
RM102, Sapphire Rapid - more excitement. We almost lost Dave. Nate Tubbs was the hero, snatching Dave back into the boat before the rest of us even knew he was in any trouble. Dave was scared, had thought he was going to be making use of those instructions about how to survive being thrown from the boat. Arlene figured this must be a sign, and that she should be due a sapphire now.
RM 108.5 Shinumo Creek waterfall - we hiked in and played in these great falls. No soap allowed in the side canyons but the shower felt great!
RM 117 Elves Chasm - green haven of clear pools dripping moss, ferns. We hiked in, swam, and climbed around behind the falls.
All but Pam climbed up behind the falls and then jumped in.
RM 119 we camped at Big Dune. Another beautiful place, but according to Pam, it was quite a hike for the women to pee. The guides told us to put on our party shirts for the ABC party (to celebrate Alive Below Crystal). (As noted earlier, Crystal is one of the bigger rapids that can be challenging).
Our guides knew to bring those party shirts (how did they have room for those?) and know how to party.
Here's a video from the party.

Day 3 - Thurs Jun 11 RM 65 to RM 81 Grapevine. Carbon Canyon - Lava Canyon hike, archeological sites
